This week, I made some progress on both the 부산 룸알바 character creator (CC) and the marvelous designer (MD). After being able to work on Native Dancers avatars directly in MD, I was able to start creating additional designs which will fit native dancer characters. From here on out, I will design clothing directly onto characters created in CC. Before, working on Native Dancers avatars in Marvelous Designers (MD) did not really work out well for me, and I experienced what seemed to be an error in modeling clothing onto a character.
Now is a good time to add details about who your characters are, and to learn about features inside of the Creative Designer. If you are looking at your character and cannot even say what they are anymore, then it is time to simplify. If you feel that you know a character when you look at them, you are doing something right. For an audience to instantly understand and relate to your characters, you have to breathe life into your creation.
It might not be surprising to learn that in order to make a great character, you have to do exactly the opposite of what we have discussed here. When it comes to designing a characters appearance, it is essential that you know who they are, and what their audiences are supposed to feel about them. When it comes to designing characters, these questions can help the creators to consider who their characters are, as well as the identity that their characters are going to adopt, before drawing the design. Like everything, there is more than one way to go about things, but these are some steps that designers can take as they start drawing out their characters.
While the steps we outline here can help provide you a starting structure for developing your character designs, it takes time and practice to sharpen your skills as a character artist. It takes years of practice to become just an okay painter, and even longer after that, practicing characters so that you are comfortable designing everything. It is vital that game designers invest resources in learning character design basics and the thought processes that go behind creating classic, beloved characters before moving onto creating concept art, then settling into character art that is ready to go for a 3D production. With such a critical role, it is not surprising that character creation is also one of the hardest elements to develop in game.
Fortunately, character design is a pretty old practice, with general tips and workflows to help aspiring designers get from conception to final art. Most character artists work pre-production, in which ideas are designed first, and then they are pushed through production. At this stage, character designers have reference libraries, learned basic design theory, and studied the basics of sculpture, meaning that it is time to start thinking about creating concept art for characters. Then, the final design is chosen, and after signing the characters, artists will produce a lot of different views of the characters to use as reference.
The process starts by having the artist shoot videos of themselves as references, trying to capture some movement or pose that is similar to the characters ideas. Creation usually involves taking a deeper look at the characters personality in order to develop visual ideas for physical features of the character. Or, if a project is a 2D animation, character designs may be passed on to a storyboard artist to be rehearsed, or a visual development artist may create additional details of this character (their house, their car, etc.
Depending on what your plans are with the character design, you may have to figure out how they are going to look from every perspective. If you are going to make this a comic book, a la Hilda by Luke Pearson, then not only does it have to make sense from all angles, it has to look great. If your character design is going to be used either in motion, or as part of a comic book, you are going to want to make sure that it works at every angle.
Try exploring shapes and angles to give your characters variety, as well as adding your own personal flair to your designs. If you are having a hard time making a characters personality shine through in one aspect of a characters design, then let that little piece of personality come through more in another. Look for opportunities to highlight features in your characters that will enhance their design.
Try and utilize all of the colors, shapes, patterns, and ideas from your character throughout your design. Using similar accessories, patterns, and colors throughout the whole character will unify the design and help make it look cohesive. Your character needs to feel unique from every single design element. Before you decide that your character looks amazing and that you want to keep going, be sure that your character is recognisable just from their silhouette.
With traits, designers find it helpful to write down 3-5 words summarizing what attributes they want viewers to experience when viewing a character. Character design may seem like an art-form of magic, but in reality, it involves thinking, experimentation, and a lot of work in order to achieve successful results. It takes a particular type of artist, one with a creative mind, to develop characters that break from the norm.
If you avoid the following pitfalls of poor design, you are on the road to creating memorable, unique character designs. While including a great character design in your work can make the story memorable and original, a poorly designed story or poorly developed characters will usually not effectively communicate the message. Amongst the extra designs were a few characters and locations that did not appear in this first section, but that I needed to get the broad look for, where I would have dealt with design when I got there.
